Leadership Touch – Impacting People

Impacting people in organizations need not be big-bang, every-one-heard, extraordinary moment in which people feel thrilled and pumped up. Such things do work according to situation and context.  Simple, personal, ordinary, every-day-routine things can be used to make a great impact on people in organization. Use such simple and inexpensive everyday activities to communicate and demonstrate that individuals are important and valued and they are welcomed in your organization.

Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist says: The advantage leaders have is it's a lot easier to do these five-minute favors, which are very short bursts of energy and attention that leave a lasting impact on people. In my first real job, when I was about a month in, the president stopped by, shook my hand, introduced himself, and said, "I just want to get together for coffee." We probably had a 15-minute interaction. And the fact that he knew who I was and cared about me and took a personal interest stuck with me for months. I decided that I didn't want to let this guy down.

Some of the Every Day Activities that can be Impacting Moments:
  • Take the first step to introduce and welcome the new-comer. The impacting thing in this is a leader taking time to reach out to the individual.
  • Acknowledge the one who stayed late at work to get the task complete and Appreciate the contribution it makes to shared objectives,  their commitment and sincerity.
Share with me what are some of those moments that has impacted people in your experience?
